Nobody's Perfect
By the time you read this, one week will have passed since the now-infamous baseball call that effectively robbed Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarrago of a perfect game. I learned this week that only twenty perfect games have ever been recorded in Major League baseball history. This would have made number twenty-one. 55-year-old umpire Jim Joyce made the call at first. It was the bottom of the ninth inning. Galarrago had retired the first two batters. Jason Donald, the next Cleveland Indians "victim," had a ball and a strike. On the third pitch, Donald grounded the ball between first and second. The first baseman hustled over to field it, and Galarrago covered the bag. Throw, catch, out. Not so fast, says Jim Joyce. So Armando Galarrago trotted back to the mound and promptly struck out the next batter. After the game, a tearful Jim Joyce apologized to Galaraggo for blowing the call. No matter how many times you play the video, Jason Donald is, without a doubt, out. The real story, however, is how Galarrago handled the obviously-missed call. In his words, "Nobody's perfect." "Nobody's perfect." Even in a "perfect" game. And yet Jesus can say "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matthew 5:48). Of course God is perfect! "He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just" (Deuteronomy 32:4). "As for God, His way is perfect. The word of the LORD is flawless" (2 Samuel 22:31). So how can WE be perfect like THAT? As David writes: "It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect" (2 Samuel 22:33). God's way is perfect, and if we follow His way then we can be perfect, too. Not in the utterly holy, totally righteous way that God is, but perfect in His eyes. In the end, if we are truly "in Christ," then the righteous Judge, the perfect Umpire, will rule in our favor. Nobody's perfect yet, but some day we will be!

Think about These Quotes....
"Pain insists upon being listened to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." C.S. Lewis
"The greatest degree of inner tranquility comes from the development of love and compassion. The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being." Tenzin Gyatzo
"Nothing true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history....Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone.....No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our own....(this is) the final form of love, which is forgiveness." Reinhold Neibuhr
"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." Apostle Paul (I Corinthians 13:13)
"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." Leo Buscaglio
"Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." Jesus (Matthew 25:40)
