Clayton's Connection
The Fellowship Zone

Practically everyone in our culture has some understanding of what Sunday School is all about. But three hundred years ago, that wasn't the case. It all began in the summer of 1780 with English newspaper owner Robert Raikes, who saw a need to impact the lives of boys who lived in the slum. Public schools were nonexistent, and the boys worked six days a week in filthy factory conditions. So Robert began what he novelly called "Sunday School," designed to teach boys how to read and write, using the Bible as the curriculum. Bible lessons were also taught at this Sunday School. Robert's school came under close scrutiny and criticism in the early years, and soon came to be known as "Raikes' Ragged School." But Raikes stayed the course, and in just fifty years, over one million English children were enrolled in Sunday School.
Wymore Church of Christ was started in 1886, and included a Sunday School, which is still going strong. At some point, a Sunday School opening time was organized, which became a time of fellowship, friendly competition between classes, and a way to create a buzz about Sunday School. Over the years, our Sunday School opening time has dwindled in numbers and in interest, with each class doing their own thing. Somewhere along the way we have lost some of that buzz. So it has been suggested, and confirmed by our elders and deacons, that we should take a break from the Sunday School opening time during the summer. In its place, we will be setting up a "Fellowship Zone" in the room occupied by the Christian Builders class. Don't worry, Builders, you won't be kicked out of your room! But we do intend to utilize the space as a place of fellowship complete with coffee, rolls, and if my wife has her way, a Diet Pepsi machine (just kidding)! The Fellowship Zone will be in full effect from 9-9:30am in the Christian Builders room and in our foyer. We look forward to seeing you all enter "The Fellowship Zone" starting this Sunday.
