Time Traps
By Jeff Weaver, with FCA Endurance

"Back in '82, I used to be able to throw a pigskin a quarter mile. How much you want to make a bet I can throw a football over them mountains? Yeah. If coach would've put me in fourth quarter... We'd have been state champions, no doubt. No doubt in my mind. You better believe things would have been different. I'd have gone pro...in a heartbeat. I'd be makin' millions of dollars and...livin' in a... big ol' mansion somewhere" (Uncle Rico, "Napoleon Dynamite").
The tragic thing about Uncle Rico from the movie "Napoleon Dynamite" is that he's stuck in the past. He's caught playing the "what if" game. By dwelling on his past, he's wasting his present. If we're honest with ourselves, we've all struggled with this at one point or another. Most of us have been Uncle Rico. And maybe we still act like that on occasion only we sound more like this: "I can't believe I dropped that pass. What if I would have caught it?" "If only I wouldn't have dropped the baton. We would have easily won that race." For us, instead of being stuck in 1982 like Uncle Rico, we get stuck in a previous play, game or season.
On the flip side, the other mental time-trap we fall into is living in the future. "When I get my chance to go in, I'll…" The problem here is that if we keep thinking about tomorrow, we'll miss the opportunities we have today. The most important time is now! It is important to learn from the past and to consider the future, but we can't live there... we must trust the Lord with our past and our future. Next time you are tempted to focus on either what is behind or before you, remember these two things: You can't change the past; your present determines your future. Today, live the life you have now. Honor the Lord by serving Him where you are and let Him take care of where you are going.

Ladies, Please Note....
There are many cake pans and a variety of serving dishes in the church kitchen. If you have brought food for some occasion recently, you should check to see if any of these left belong to you.

Getting Along with People...
1. Keep skids on your tongue. Always say less than you think. Cultivate a low, calm voice. How you say something often counts more than what you say.
2. Make promises sparingly and keep them faithfully.
3. Never let an opportunity pass to say a kind or encouraging thing to or about someone.
4. Be interested in others. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who mourn.
5. Be cheerful. Hide your pains, worries and disappointments under a smile.
6. Preserve an open mind for all debatable questions. It is a mark of a superior mind to disagree and yet be friendly.
7. Let your virtues speak for themselves.
8. Be careful of another's feelings. Humor at the other fellow's expense is rarely worth the effort.
9. Pay no attention to ill-natured remarks about yourself. Simply live so that no one will believe them.
10. Don't be anxious about getting any rewards you might deserve. Do your work, be patient, and keep your disposition sweet; forget self, and you will be rewarded.

The World Is Ready....
What we seek was best said a few years ago, not by a churchman, but by a secular magazine:
In the search for peace throughout generations, humankind has turned to the Bible. For the things that we all need to live by are found in this Book which is the Word of God. In its pages men and women have found help for their deepest needs, comfort for their shattered spirits, light for their darkest hour. Always, the Bible has inspired the noblest courage and the most sublime actions of man. Heroes have dedicated their lives to its principles. Martyrs have died with its words on their lips.
Now, an anguished world turns to this book that has molded the lives of human- kind -- for its lessons of mercy, humanity, tolerance, and charity; for a restoration of the spirit torn with grief, for a return of hope and faith. And here, in its pages, to seek the flame that lifts men's souls; the courage to face tomorrow, the faith that men shall learn to live together in brotherhood and peace.
